Two villages, one town: what does that actually change for you?

It changes who is near you when you call. The town of Manlius contains three incorporated villages, Fayetteville, Manlius and Minoa, each with its own village hall and its own name on an envelope, and this office sits inside one of them. So a technician working a job in the village of Manlius has not left the town that the office is in. That is a fact about municipal boundaries rather than a claim about a clock, which is exactly why it is worth more than a claim about a clock.

It also removes a question people ask politely and then quietly check. Plenty of firms that say they cover Manlius are dispatching from the far side of Syracuse or further. The honest version here is short: 2.5 miles, same town, one road with both village names in it.

What the village actually calls about follows from what it is rather than from anything we could claim about it. It is a compact village centre with a residential town around it, in the Fayetteville Manlius school district, so the work leans toward households, home offices and small professional practices: machines that have to keep working, wireless that has to reach the far end of a house, and the occasional small office network that needs somebody who does this properly.

Getting to Manlius, and what a village call usually turns out to be

There is one obvious road and it is named after the trip. NY 257 runs between the two villages and is signed Fayetteville Manlius Road for most of its length, which makes it hard to get lost and easy to describe. In the village centre, East Seneca Street carries NY 92 and NY 173 at the same time, so an address given as being on one of those is usually the same stretch of street.

Once somebody is at the door, the village splits its work in a predictable way. Anything inside a single machine is usually quicker taken back to the bench in Fayetteville, because the parts are there and the machine is not sitting on your desk waiting. Anything about the house is the opposite: wireless that dies at the back bedroom, a printer that only some people can see, cameras that keep dropping, wired points somebody should have run years ago.

For the third kind of call, where the machine still starts and the trouble is an account, a password, an update that went wrong or software behaving badly, a remote session is usually the shortest route from problem to fixed, and it does not need anybody to drive 2.5 miles.
